WEST RIVER STREET

THE STAR HOTEL:
- 10015 WEST RIVER STREET
There is still debate in town as to whether George Schaffer built the Star Hotel for his large family's residence or for workers in his mill. Schaffer was partners with Joseph Gray in the first lumber mill on the Truckee River in 1867. The partnership was dissolved in 1871 when Schaffer moved his mill site out towards Martis Valley. By this time, Schaffer had made Truckee his home and had built at least three buildings that can still be found in town. The house located directly west is believed to have been Schaffer's private residence.
THE ALTA HOTEL: - 10014 WEST RIVER STREET
The Alta Hotel is one of the three oldest hotels in Truckee. It was originally built as a hotel and a saloon during a period of recreational excitement in town. Truckee, during the 1920s, was an important west coast focus for a budding film industry. Similarly, Truckee's winter months were alive with winter carnival activities when the Alta was first built. It was originally known as the Tahoe Saloon. Before the Alta Hotel was constructed, another hotel called the Flor D'Italia, owned and operated by the Sassarini family, existed on this site, but burned in a fire in October 1921.
