OTHER HISTORICAL SITES
1. MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY:
On the north side of town, driving on East Jibboom Street, you will come to the top of a hill which ends at the town's cemetery. Here you will see many old tombstones made of wood, granite and marble. Mr. C.F. McGlashan is buried immediately on the left-hand side as you enter the gates. Many other former residents and prominent families are also laid to rest here.
2. ALDER CREEK SITE:
Drive north on Route 89 for 2.9 miles. Here one can learn the saga of the Donner families' winter plight, as well as take a short nature walk.
3. DONNER MEMORIAL STATE PARK:
The story of the Donner Party may be learned here as well as additional facts about local history.
4. McGLASHAN POINT:
After leaving the state park, continue on old Highway 40 along Donner Lake and ascend to the observation point which allows a beautiful view of Donner Lake and the surrounding mountains. Here you can walk over the glaciated rock and see the snow sheds covering the track of the railroad.
5. SKI MUSEUM:
West of Truckee at Boreal Ridge Ski Area is located the Western America Skisports Museum and a memorial to Snowshoe Thompson, a local hero.
